Promote Human Trafficking Awareness in Your Organization

null

As a manager, one of your social responsibilities is to promote safety and security in your employees. Did you know that human trafficking affects millions worldwide? It’s an overlooked, yet pervasive issue that needs addressing. By educating employees on the signs to look out for and implementing anti-trafficking policies in your corporate training, you can help promote human trafficking awareness in your organization.

What Is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is a crime that involves coercing a person into providing labor or commercial sex acts with the aim of exploiting them for profit. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), it can happen in any community and victims can be any age, race, gender, or nationality.

How to Promote Human Trafficking Awareness in the Corporate World

Here are some best practices to ensure you’re taking steps on an issue that requires some degree of corporate activism:

Adopt an Anti-Human Trafficking Policy

Organizations should develop and implement a policy to ensure they are not complicit in any practices that constitute human trafficking. Implementing ethical business practices fosters safety, transparency, and fairness in the workplace.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recommends adopting a policy that includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Forbid employees from using company time, resources, and funds to view sexually explicit content or procure sex acts
  • It should also state that the organization prohibits the use of forced labor, misleading, or fraudulent practices in recruiting candidates, and coercive tactics such as confiscating identity documents
  • The policy should be conveyed in writing, outline reporting procedures, and detail consequences for violations

Educate, Educate, Educate

Education is the first step to prevention. A good start is by incorporating general awareness video training from DHS Blue Campaign to help your organization recognize the signs of human trafficking and how to best respond to them.

Invest in Employee Awareness Programs

If money isn’t an issue, you can always invest in employee awareness programs that are either in person or available online in video format.
