Healthy Sleep Habits: Useful Tips on Catching Some Zs

From the rest-deprived parent to the overworked shift person, most people crave a good night’s sleep. In fact, most healthy adults need between seven to nine hours of sleep per night to function at their best – but few are actually able to achieve this. Here are some facts:

  • 60 million Americans have problems sleeping.
  • About 40% of Americans are getting less than the recommended amount of shuteye.

When a person regularly gets less than the recommended amount of continuous sleep, he or she can experience serious consequences on the brain and body, including reduced immunity, concentration problems and decreased motor skills.

Staying awake for 18 consecutive hours will impair a person’s mental and motor skills as much as a blood-alcohol level of .05%.
